[ Quotations ] Open Question : In "The Bell Jar", Why does Esther wake up
with her head shaved?

At the end of chapter 13 Esther attempts to commit suicide by taking fifty
sleeping pills and locking herself in the closet. In chapter 14 she awakes
in a hospital with a bruised face and a shaved head. I don't understand
why her head was shaved. Was it for some medical reason? How does a shaved
head impact drug overdose? Please explain. Thanks!
